The Darlington County Water & Sewer Authority experienced accelerated growth in it's water system from inception in 1971.  The DCWSA initially made minor extensions during the mid 1970's by connecting to Hartsville, Darlington, and Society Hill, while plans were being developed for it's own initial independent water supply.
The initial distribution system, supply, and storage was constructed between 1975 and 1980.  It consisted of 2,011 customers and a water treatment plant at the intersection of Ruby Road and Old Camden Road.  It also consisted of a 1.1 MG standpipe and a 0.5 MG elevated storage tank on SC 151 at the DCWSA current office complex.
The Darlington County Water & Sewer Authority presently serves approximately 17,000 customers through a little over 1,000 miles of water lines.  These lines are interconnected to three water treatment plants and 11 water storage tanks.  The water treatment plants are supplied by 12 deep wells pulling water from 200 to 600 feet below ground level.  The water treatment plants produce an average of 3,900,000 gallons of drinking water each day.  The 11 water storage tanks hold 8,650,000 gallons of drinking water in reserve.

The Darlington County Water & Sewer Authority provides sewer service to a number of industrial and commercial users throughout the county.  The sewer systems installed for the industrial and commercial users were funded through Economic Development Grants and other Federal, State and local grant funds.  The Authority is in the process of completing a Sewer Planning Study to determine the feasibility of providing sewer to various parts of the county.  Once the study has been completed and as funds become available the Authority will begin installing the sewer systems.

The Darlington County  Water and Sewer Authority has 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year service for emergencies.
